FAQs

Why did we change our name from self-Injury Recovery anonymous to self-injury recovery & Awareness?

SIRA has not used the 12 steps in many years, as we developed our own literature called “Layers to Discovery” which was written with the self-injury psyche in mind by people with lived experience. We will always listen to our community and know when it’s time for a change. Now, we are SIRA: Self-Injury Recovery & Awareness.

Are there in-person SIRA support groups? If so, where do they meet?

All in-person meetings are currently suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pre-COVID, the only regularly scheduled meeting was in New York City, in the borough of Manhattan. We hope to resume in-person meetings in Manhattan when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, all meetings are taking place via Zoom, using meeting ID: 590 719 8589. This meeting is password protected. Please email us at info@thesira.org for the password.

We will continue to have virtual meetings once in-person meetings resume.

How frequently does the group meet?

SIRA meets weekly via Zoom. We have Saturday meetings at 4:30 PM Eastern Time, Sunday meetings at 12 PM Eastern Time, and Wednesday meetings at 9:30pm Eastern Time. SIRA meetings are one hour and fifteen minutes in duration.

The quantity of meetings relies on volunteers. If you would like to host a meeting please email us at info@thesira.org. The only requirement to host is a desire to stop engaging in self-injury and to have more meetings! There will always be a backup host in attendance with hosting experience to assist you.

What are the eligibility requirements to join or participate?

A desire to stop engaging in self-injury. SIRA does not have an age-requirement. All ages are welcome. We welcome parents and/or guardians to attend a meeting before and/or with your minor.

Saturday meetings are open to all i.e. Parents of minors, Medical students, anyone wanting insight into self-injury.

Does SIRA charge an attendance fee or membership dues?
